Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
